June 8, 2006
Olney.….Rep. David Reis (R - Ste. Marie) was recently named to the Illinois Meat and Poultry Inspection Task Force. This task force was created through House Joint Resolution 115 which passed out of the General Assembly this past spring. The purpose of the task force is to review current law and regulations pertaining to the licensing and regulation of meat and poultry processors and slaughterers. Also, the Task Force will be charged with determining whether changes are needed in the licensing and regulation of these entities.
"As a farmer and as an elected official, I am honored to be asked to serve with my colleagues and other agricultural groups on this task force," said Reis. "We've had a number of small Type-1 packing plants that have been concerned about the increased regulations that have been put into place over the past couple of decades. This task force will sit down and look at these regulations and make necessary recommendations to bring back to the General Assembly next year" Reis said.
The task force, which is being overseen by the Illinois Department of Agriculture will meet throughout the summer and fall.
