Reis Brings "In God We Trust" Plate Proposal To Illinois House

January 29, 2008

Olney, IL.….Representative David Reis (R-Ste. Marie) proudly introduced "In God We Trust" specialty license plate legislation in the Illinois House today. If approved, the measure will create a new license plate bearing the words "In God We Trust" that will be offered through the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.

"The use of ‘In God We Trust’ is patriotic, it embodies the spirit of our forefathers," said Reis. "For those who purchase the plate, it may be an expression of their beliefs or it may celebrate our nation’s heritage. And for others, with loved one’s serving over seas, it may simply be a statement of hope and comfort."

Under Representative Reis’ measure, House Bill 4665, the Secretary of State’s office retains the sole authority to design and manage the distribution of "In God We Trust" license plates. An applicant shall be charged a $15 fee for issuance in addition to other applicable registration fees. Any monies collected from the sale of "In God We Trust" license plates shall be deposited into the Secretary of State’s fund to manufacture all specialty license plates.

License plates bearing "In God We Trust" were first crafted in the State of Indiana. With million of specialized plates sold in the Hoosier state, "In God We Trust" now serves as a catalyst for Illinois lawmakers to take action.

Reis continued, "lawmakers in Indiana began offering ‘In God We Trust’ license plates in January of 2007 and already have over 1.6 million plates registered. With a population of just over six million residents in Indiana, this is a powerful message displayed on their roadways everyday. I believe Illinois residents deserve the same opportunity."

The measure now awaits legislative action in the House of Representatives. For additional information on the "In God We Trust’ license plates proposal, please contact Representative Reis’ office at (618) 392-0108 or keith@davidreis.org.
