Reis Sponsors Legislation to Ban Taxpayer-Funded Abortion

OLNEY… In response to the recent signing of House Bill 40, a new state law that will spend millions of our tax dollars for abortion on demand, State Representative David Reis (R-Ste. Marie) is sponsoring legislation to repeal the law and ban taxpayer-funded abortion in Illinois.

“As a husband, a father, and a child of and believer in God, my opposition to this law goes to the core of who I am,” Rep. Reis said. “The people of my district overwhelmingly expressed their opposition to taxpayer-funded abortions. They believe, like I do, that a life begins at conception and no one has a right to take that life, let alone use taxpayer dollars to pay for it.”

Representative Reis filed House Bill 4108 to repeal the changes made to state law by House Bill 40, thereby reaffirming Illinois’ pro-life policy stance. Reis is also sponsoring legislation that would ban the use of taxpayer funds for abortion on demand.

Reis cited a moral imperative to oppose the new law and pointed out that the potential cost to the State of Illinois could be in the tens of millions of dollars.

Nearly 40,000 abortions occurred in Illinois in 2015 according to the most recent data from the Illinois Department of Public Health. Estimates have shown that HB 40 could cost Illinois taxpayers an extra $30-$60 million annually. Aside from the potential cost, Reis noted that the law allows for unprecedented taxpayer funding of what he calls ‘barbaric’ abortive practices at the same time Illinois currently owes almost $16 billion in unpaid bills to medical providers and other vendors.

“During my lifetime our laws have moved from allowing abortions in the 1st trimester, then the 2nd, then the 3rd trimester, and now the Chicago politicians want taxpayers to pay for it,” Reis said. “This law is an assault on the unborn and an affront to hard-working taxpayers. HB 40 provides for taxpayer-funded abortions on demand and the barbaric practice of partial birth abortion. We have a moral and fiscal responsibility to repeal it immediately.”
